Day 14 July 24, 2007

We gave group presentations tonight. There had been many thought processes going on tonight. The project was developing a framework of components. We would hope to reuse some components, like that of a ATM card reader to also read a card as an entry card.

As mentioned previous about software components, I found somewhat more about bar code scanners. An interesting article by Marshall Brain Everything you buy in the store has a UPC code on it. The UPC code gets scanned when you purchase an item at the store.

At this site you can generate a small bar code.

Here is a funny thing that people thought the bar code had a relation to “666″ or “The Beast”.

Proof that there are no three sixes in a bar code.

The first patent of the bar code was in 1952. It was described as a “bull’s eye”. In 1966 the bar code got it’s first commercial use. An industry standard was set. By 1970 a company named Logicon started the Universal Grocery Products Identification Code or UGPIC.
It goes on into more detail in this article. Check it out.

I tried to change the background and could not get the old one back. I will learn more from experimenting with this blog in the future.
